In November 2013, the Bureau International des Expositions, the organization of 167 member states that co-ordinates the World Expos, announced that Dubai will be hosting the World Expo 2020.
Fireworks lit up the Burj-al-Khalifa and people all over the emirate celebrated the winning bid over Turkey, Brazil and Russia. The WorldExpo 2020 is the largest international event ever to take place in the Middle East and North Africa area (MENA), and is expected to generate more than $25 billion for UAE’s economy.
According to Simon Stockley, a South African private banker, “Dubai is on the rebound, post the crisis of 2008 and the winning of the bid will accelerate the upward trajectory”. Analysts predict that the Expo will boost the economy with the effects of the $7 billion government expenditure trickling down to other industries. American Bank Merrill Lynch calculates a 0.5% GDP increase in 2016-19 that can be attributed to the WorldExpo 2020.
