Numerous futuristic projects are being developed in Dubai, the city of ingenuity, to revolutionise how we live, work, and play. As a result, the first fleet of robotaxis will be made available in Dubai starting this month, in October 2023, to reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety.

Five entirely autonomous electric taxis will take to the streets of Dubai’s Jumeirah neighbourhood in a ground-breaking project. These autonomous vehicles will travel an 8-kilometre (5-mile) stretch of road in this exclusive neighbourhood under the control of Cruise, a General Motors subsidiary. The initiative is a component of Dubai’s ambitious Smart Dubai 2021 goal, which aims to establish Dubai as the world’s smartest city.

The move represents a key turning point for Dubai, which has been making considerable investments in autonomous transportation technologies. Dubai will aim to reduce transportation costs by Dh900 million ($245.2m) through its adoption of autonomous driving, Sheikh Hamdan tweeted. The city aspires to be one of the first places in the world to commercially deploy robots. Dubai thereby aims to set an example for the Middle East by being the first city to implement autonomous taxis.

To guarantee the security and dependability of these robots, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is doing everything possible. They will keep a tight eye on the trials to assess how well they did and make sure they adhered to the highest standards.

In 2016, Singapore entered the arena of self-driving cars with the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) spinoff NuTonomy and became the first company to make robotaxis available to the public. Later, NuTonomy signed partnerships with other companies to develop its robotaxi services. By 2018, Russia also began trials with two self-driving vehicles by the Yandex services in Innopolis, Russia. 

Fast forward to 2023, when many countries are making progress in the field of self-driving cars, which are changing the way people travel. Some companies in China, such as Baidu, DiDi Chuxing, AutoX, and WeRide, are leading the way in creating and testing these cars. Yizhuang, a district of Beijing’s suburbs, has been officially allowing local robotaxi operators to collect fees for autonomous taxis since September 2023. 

Meanwhile, in the US, in February 2023, Amazon started testing its robotaxis on the streets of California. The service will soon be available to the group’s full-time employees. Also, two well-known tech giants, Uber and Waymo, have partnered to introduce Waymo’s robotaxi to Uber’s platform in May 2023, with a set number of Waymo vehicles expected to be on the road later this year.


With the introduction of robotaxis, Dubai is ready to alter its visitor experience.
